William "Will" Porter and Nicole "Niki" Porter in jail for the death of Larry Kermit King
Two married Nevada Union High School graduates pleaded not guilty Tuesday in San Diego to murder charges.
William "Will" Porter and Nicole "Niki" Porter, both 22, remained in jail with no bail after their arraignment for the alleged Aug. 3 shooting death of Larry Kermit King, 47, according to San Diego court records and the San Diego Union-Tribune.
San Diego Police told the paper the Porters shot handguns at King while reacting to his intrusion into a neighbor's apartment.
"The attorney said it looks good for the kids," said Mr. Porter's grandmother, Edith Lobb of Nevada County. She said her grandson was a three-tour veteran of the Iraq War.
King was asleep in the apartment of a former girlfriend who had a restraining order against him, when she walked in about 1 a.m., the paper said. The woman argued with King and fled to the Porters' apartment for help, San Diego Police Capt. Mary Cornicelli told the newspaper.
King pounded on the Porters' upstairs apartment door and said he was going to kill someone, Cornicelli said. Feeling threatened for themselves and their neighbor, the Porters armed themselves with handguns, she said.
Will Porter pursued King and a scuffle ensued, Cornicelli said. During the fight, King was shot; Niki Porter allegedly shot from the couple's apartment balcony as well, Cornicelli said.
She would not say whether King was armed but told the Union-Tribune he did not show or display any weapons.
Police recovered handguns from both Porters and booked them into two different county jails, with no bail, on suspicion of murder.
Will Porter's mother, Susan Porter, was unavailable for comment.
Will Porter was listed in the Nevada Union High School 2002 yearbook as a graduating senior. Niki Porter's MySpace account said she was formerly of Nevada City and graduated from NU in 2003.
The Porters are set for bail review hearings on Aug. 13 and preliminary hearings on the charges on Sept. 10.

I served with will in Iraq, he was our boot and a damn good Marine. He's also a kind person that wouldn't hurt a fly. I hope this doesn't ruin his life, having to do three combat tours is already enough!

This was clearly a self-defense case, but the police and DA got it wrong. All charges were ultimately entirely dropped and Niki and Will can never be tried on this case again. Those who read stuff like this need to understand the full picture and not just the hype that the media likes to publish. It truly was a self-defense case.

I would like to see a little more info. Larry was an old friend and honorable businessman. Shot in the back? Come on. Self defense or just wanting to see some action and kick some ass?
